Shower & Wet Area Waterproofing

Waterproofing is the single most critical step in any shower or wet area tile installation, and it is the phase most often done incorrectly by inexperienced contractors — with consequences that do not appear until tile, grout, and drywall have been demolished to find mould and rot behind a beautiful-looking surface.

A properly waterproofed shower in a Calgary home begins with the correct substrate: cement board, DensShield, or a foam tile backer like Schluter Kerdi-Board, followed by a continuous waterproof membrane applied to all surfaces including the pan, curb, niche walls, and at least 6 inches onto the ceiling.

The membrane system — whether sheet-applied Kerdi, liquid RedGard, or a rolled fabric membrane like Wedi — must be continuous and without pinholes, bridged at corners, and cured before tiling begins.

Curb-less (barrier-free) showers have become a major trend in Calgary bathroom renovations, but they require a fully sloped pre-slope mortar bed beneath the waterproof membrane to ensure drainage toward the linear or centre drain — a technical challenge that distinguishes a certified tile installer from a handyman. Steam showers present an even higher waterproofing bar, requiring a fully sealed enclosure including the ceiling and all penetrations for steam heads, shelving, and light fixtures.
