What re-beds a loose Calgary tile?

A loose tile needs to be fully removed, the old adhesive cleaned off both the tile and the substrate, and the tile re-set with fresh thinset — there is no shortcut that produces a lasting repair.

Tapping the tile and hearing a hollow sound tells you the bond has failed underneath. In Calgary homes, this happens for a few predictable reasons: the original installer used insufficient thinset coverage, the substrate moved due to frost heave or seasonal concrete shrinkage, or — very commonly in basement floors — no crack isolation membrane was used and the slab shifted enough to break the bond. Before you re-bed anything, you need to understand why it came loose, or the repair will fail again within a season or two.

Removing and re-setting the tile starts with carefully prying it up using a stiff putty knife or margin trowel, working from the grout joint inward. If the tile is intact and you want to reuse it, go slowly — porcelain and ceramic both crack under uneven prying pressure. Once the tile is out, scrape all the old thinset off the back of the tile and off the substrate until both surfaces are clean and flat. Any high spots of cured thinset left behind will prevent full contact with the new adhesive and you'll end up with the same hollow-bond problem.

Thinset selection matters here. For a standard interior floor repair, use a polymer-modified thinset (ANSI A118.4 or better). Back-butter the tile generously and apply thinset to the substrate with a notched trowel — a 6mm V-notch for standard tiles, a larger square-notch for anything 30cm or bigger. Press the tile firmly into place with a slight twisting motion to collapse the ridges and achieve full coverage. Aim for at least 95% contact in wet areas and 80% in dry interior areas. Set it level with the surrounding tiles using tile levelling clips if you have them — lippage between a repaired tile and its neighbours is very noticeable.

Calgary-specific concern: if this tile is on a basement slab and it has come loose once, it will likely come loose again without addressing the root cause. Calgary basement slabs move seasonally — frost depth here exceeds 1.2 metres, and that ground movement telegraphs right through a rigid concrete slab into tile bonded directly to it. That membrane decouples the tile from the slab movement and is the only reliable long-term solution for Calgary basement tile floors.

Allow the thinset to cure fully — at least 24 hours before walking on it, 48-72 hours before grouting. In Calgary's dry winter air (indoor humidity can drop to 15-20%), thinset loses moisture faster than it should. Lay a damp cloth or plastic sheet over the repair area for the first 24 hours to slow the cure and ensure a strong bond.

Re-grouting the joint is the final step. Match the existing grout type (sanded for joints 3mm and wider, unsanded for narrower joints) and colour as closely as possible. Mist the joint lightly before applying grout in winter to prevent the dry air from pulling moisture out of the grout before it sets.

If the tile is cracked rather than just loose, or if you are seeing multiple loose tiles in the same area, that pattern usually points to a substrate problem — deflection, heave, or a failed waterproofing layer in a wet area — that needs professional assessment before any repair work begins.
